The children have thoroughly enjoyed our ‘Top Gear’ Theme this term. They have had to work together as a class following a detailed instruction manual to build an electric kit car. They have used various tools, wired electronics as well as designing bodywork and logos. We have been super impressed with the children’s problem solving and S.T.E.M skills. We certainly have engineers of the future! Each class has voted on a favourite name for their car: ‘Frost and Furious (6DF), ‘KLLR Electrics’ (6KL/LR) and ‘ Lightning McGreen’ (6JJ). The cars will be ‘race ready’ after half term. We all cannot wait to get them on the starting line! Watch this space for a full race report!
As ethical informed citizens, the children have learnt about Syria and Syrian refugees and, inspired by the book, ‘The Boy at the Back of the Class,’ written persuasive letters to Boris Johnson about the need to support refugees in our country. We will share these letters on SeeSaw for you to read, please take a look! We participated in a parallel Senedd Election in early May. All the children had the opportunity to read different political party’s manifestos and vote for their favourite candidate in Newport East Constituency. The children analysed the results from this 11-16 election during maths, developing their data handling skills.
We have been lucky enough to have Newport Live deliver an Anti-Smoking and Sugar workshop this term.. As healthy, confident individuals, it is important to understand the dangers of smoking and sugar for our health. The children have also loved their ‘Move and Motivate’ sessions with Newport Live. They have had the opportunity to practise their physical skills with their friends and enjoy our wonderful outdoor space. We have also headed outdoors come rain or shine to complete a ‘Daily Mile’ around the playground or field. This has also helped to boost our mental and physical well-being this term. The children loved using our school Fitbits to track their steps and pulse rates.
What an incredibly busy term we have had. We are racing ahead to our final half term with Year Six and we cannot wait to make it a memorable and special one!
