Year 6 Spring A Update 2025

Over the past few weeks, Year 6 have been on an incredible journey, learning about World War 2 through a range of exciting and immersive activities. From stepping back in time to experiencing air raid shelters to getting creative with crafts, it has been a truly memorable experience!

Our adventure began with a fascinating trip to Cardiff Castle, where we discovered what life was like during World War II. We explored the underground air raid shelters, where people sought safety during bombing raids. Sitting in the dark tunnels, listening to the sounds of sirens and distant explosions, we could almost imagine what it was like to be there during the war. It was a sobering yet fascinating experience that brought history to life.

Back at school, we had our very own ARP (Air Raid Precaution) evacuation drill! Led by our very own Warden Mr Morgan, we followed the siren’s call and hurried to our school’s air raid shelter. The drill gave us a small glimpse into how children during the war had to be ready to take cover at any moment. It was both exciting and eye-opening to imagine how life must have been for evacuees.

We’ve loved hearing from our Year 6 parents and we’ve been lucky to have grandparents visit to share their personal family stories from the war. Listening to these real-life accounts made history feel even more real and personal. One of our dads also led a WW2 re-enactment workshop, bringing in artefacts, and uniforms. It was an unforgettable hands-on experience!

To learn about how people had to be resourceful during the war, we took part in a ‘Make Do and Mend’ project, where we each made our own teddy bears from different materials. It was a challenge, but we persevered, just like families did during wartime when new toys and clothes were scarce. We’ve learned lots of skills and applied them to our teddy bears and can’t wait to take them with us on our Steam Train Trip.

As part of Safer Internet Day and Children’s Mental Health Week, we took part in an Adobe Live Lesson. We discussed the importance of staying safe online, managing screen time, and looking after our mental well-being.

We were lucky enough to be invited to watch a live performance of Frozen the Musical at Rougemont School, in which some of our own children performed. We were so proud of them and were inspired ready for our end of year show (which is quite a while away yet!).

To finish off this exciting term, we have also been preparing entries for the Eisteddfod! From poetry to artwork and performances, we are excited to showcase our talents. This is a fantastic opportunity for children to enter a wide range of competitions and to earn points for their house. It would be great to have lots of entries into the D&T competition where the children have to design and make a WW2 air-raid shelter.

We look forward to continuing with our theme after half term.

Have a safe and happy half term.
