Year 5 Spring B Blog

What a fantastic term it has been for our Year 5 learners! From exploring Welsh culture to investigating the wonders of the ocean, we have engaged in an exciting range of activities that have developed their knowledge and skills across multiple subjects. Here’s a glimpse into what we have been up to:

We kicked off this half term with our very own Eisteddfod, celebrating Welsh culture, language, and creativity. Pupils showcased their talents through dance, storytelling, and art, while also learning about the significance of this traditional festival. It was wonderful to see so many enthusiastic performances and wonderful creations!

A highlight of the term was our educational visit to Cardiff Bay. Pupils took on the role of inquisitive researchers, interviewing members of the public as part of their learning. They also enjoyed a scenic boat tour around the bay and had the unique opportunity to step inside the Senedd, where they learned more about how decisions are made in Wales.

We were delighted to welcome Richard from County in the Community, who delivered an engaging and informative session about the history of Newport County Football Club. Our pupils were fascinated to learn about the club’s journey, its impact on the local community, and the importance of teamwork and perseverance both on and off the pitch.

Inspired by Herbert Nitsch, the world-record-holding Austrian freediver, our curious young scientists explored how long they could hold their breath! We collected and recorded their results in a class table, and used our numeracy skills to calculate the mean breath-hold time. This hands-on STEM investigation sparked curiosity about human endurance and the effects of oxygen on the body.

Our ‘Discover and Do’ session was packed with exciting ocean-themed activities: Pupils crafted poetry inspired by the rhythm and movement of the sea. After studying a variety of wave art, they used different textures and techniques to create their own artwork, which reflected the untamed energy of ocean waves. After discovering the unique properties of the Dead Sea, pupils undertook an investigation into the effect of salt on buoyancy. Using the microscope to view seashells and sea creatures opened up a whole new world of discovery and curiosity. The intricate patterns, tiny ridges, and crystal-like structures show how beautifully complex nature really is. Children thoroughly enjoyed using the glockenspiels as they went on a musical exploration, creating melodies that mimicked the sounds of waves and marine life.

It has been a term filled with creativity, discovery, and hands-on learning. Well done to all our Year 5 pupils for their enthusiasm and hard work!
