What a fantastic Autumn B Term we have had in year 3.

We continued our Time Travellers theme by looking at the Romans and began with maths, which became a thrilling adventure in our Crack the Lock lesson. Using Roman numerals, the children solved a series of mathematical problems to uncover a secret 4-digit code. Their mission? Unlock the mysterious wooden box! With teamwork, logical thinking, and a bit of Roman numeral know-how, they cracked the code and opened the box, celebrating their problem-solving prowess with the (chocolate) Roman coin treasure from inside the box.

Roman Discover and Do: Hands-on History

History came alive as we immersed ourselves in Roman life with exciting activities from a Roman Centurion. Here’s what we got up to:

  • Natural Dye Investigation: We explored which plants and spices could make the best natural dye for changing white cloth. With careful experiments using turmeric, lemon, red cabbage, and beetroot, we discovered some surprising results!
  • Cleaning Roman Coins: The Centurion challenged us to clean his ancient Roman coins. We experimented with washing up liquid, vinegar, lemon juice, and bicarbonate of soda to see which worked best. The coins were sparkling by the end of the activity!
  • Making Mosaics: Creativity flowed as we designed and created Roman-style mosaics. The results were fantastic, with colourful patterns that would make any Roman villa proud.

Pompeii News Report with Green Screen and iMovie

Technology met history as we stepped into the shoes of reporters covering the dramatic eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Using a green screen and iMovie, the children created Pompeii News Reports. Their creativity and storytelling skills shone through as they delivered the latest breaking news from the ancient world. Make sure to check out their reports on Seesaw.

Writing and Sending Letters to Santa

No festive season would be complete without a little magic! The children wrote thoughtful letters to Santa, sharing their Christmas wishes and telling him how well they are doing in school. The letters are on their way to the North Pole and some children have received a reply from the main man himself. Year 3 were also really lucky to get a visit from Santa who gave them all a present.

The Angel Who Nearly Missed It All – A Christmas Concert to Remember

We finished the term with our Christmas concert, The Angel Who Nearly Missed It All, which was a heartwarming success! The children worked so hard to rehearse their lines and perfect their songs, and the year 3 teachers were so proud of the enthusiasm and energy they brought to the stage. It was a festive treat that truly captured the Christmas spirit! It’s been an unforgettable term of learning, creativity, and Christmas cheer. A huge well done to everyone for their hard work.

We hope you all have a lovely well earned break and we look forward to seeing you all in January for more adventures in the Spring Term.
