This half term, our theme has been ‘My Wish for the World.’ We started by watching a video about ‘The Global Goals’ and then each child created their own personal wish for the world. There were so many thoughtful and unique wishes shared across the year group, showing just how kind and caring our children are. Many of the wishes focused on taking care of our planet and the living things that share it with us—people, plants, and animals.
We wrote a report on how to care for our local habitats and showed off our amazing knowledge on the topic! We also explored recycling, learning about the different materials in our rubbish and sorting them into categories. The children discovered which items go in each of Newport’s recycling bins, and we talked about what happens to recyclable materials and what they can be turned into. To encourage others to recycle, we designed posters to spread the word that CO-OP shops now accept crisp packets for recycling. We even held a friendly competition between classes to see who could collect the most! Class 4 collected the most with a grand total of 147 crisp packets! Da iawn! These crisp packets will be taken to the CO-OP for recycling.
This half term, we also celebrated Diwali! The children created beautiful diva lamps from folded paper, coloured rangoli patterns, and even made and enjoyed delicious coconut sweets! We also had a visit from Chartwells who taught us all about how to avoid wasting food. We used extra milk, spare bananas and some frozen berries to make delicious smoothies. We all loved them! We’ve also been very lucky to have special visitors from Newport Council to teach us about road safety. We completed 4 sessions to earn out certificates and we are so proud of ourselves! We now know how to be super safe when we are outside and around roads.
We were thrilled to welcome everyone to our Christmas Concert. The children worked so hard, and their performance was absolutely fantastic. Thank you for helping them learn their lines and for attending the concert—seeing you in the audience made them so happy! We also had a great time singing our favourite song from our concert, ‘Well I Never!’ at Glyn Anwen. Year 2 also enjoyed watching Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmas at their movie night together.
Enjoy a well-deserved break over Christmas. We hope Santa brings all your Christmas wishes to life. We can’t wait to see you back in the new year!
Nadolig Llawen and Blwyddyn Newydd Dda from all of Year 2!
