Year 1 Update Autumn B

We have had another great term!

We have been very busy continuing our learning about food, healthy lifestyles, maintaining a balanced diet and reading lots of stories which have supported our learning.

In Languages, Literacy and Communication lessons, we have been reading ‘Supertato’, ‘The Gingerbread Man’ and ‘Stone Soup’. We came into school one morning and found our classes super messy…The Evil Pea had snuck in and caused a right mess! We had to make detailed wanted posters to try and find him.

We incorporated numeracy across the curriculum in our Literacy sessions by reading the instructions and weighing the ingredients to make gingerbread men and vegetable soup. Both tasted delicious.

In Numeracy and Mathematics lessons we have been identifying coins and values of money. We have been buying our own snack at snack time and identifying the correct coins we need to use and how much change we will get back. We have been identifying number bonds to 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 and understanding which 2 numbers go together to make our number of the week. Finally, we have been incorporating Christmas into our learning by weighing ingredients for reindeer food and measuring and weighing Christmas decorations.

We were very lucky to have a lot of exciting visitors come into school this term.

The nutritionist from Chartwells visit us at the start of Autumn B for a workshop all about maintaining a balanced diet and understanding where food comes from. It was very interesting and we enjoyed participating in a quiz at the end, testing our knowledge.

We then had a visit from a parent in Class 1 who presented a presentation all about their family allotment. We found out what they grow their, how they look after what they grow and asked them questions to further our learning and understanding.

Beach Academy Wales visited us and we made our own Christmas decorations. We had to ‘drill’ a hole into the top of a log slice and draw a Christmas robin on the front.

Finally, a very special visitor came to our school and gave us a present! He was dressed in a red suit, had a white beard and enjoys biscuits and mince pies….can you guess who it was?

In Science and technology, we were shocked to find out that ‘The Evil Pea’ had frozen all of the vegetables! We needed to try and get them out. We used salt, ‘hot’ water and different tools to try and free the vegetables. We predicted what would free the vegetables first.

We also tested different materials to identify which materials were waterproof and which materials were not. We tested fabric, foil, a sponge, cling film, duplo blocks and paper. Which materials do you think are waterproof?

In Expressive Arts, we followed instructions to make our own ‘Supertato’ using a real potato! The finished results looked great and we used these for role play activities. We have also designed and created our own Gingerbread Houses out of cardboard boxes!

We focused on Diwali and why it is celebrated. We used our beebots to help Rama and Sita get home and out of the forest, we weighed ingredients to make salt dough diva lamps and we made diva lamp crackers to sell at the hatch to the rest of the school community.

We joined in with ‘Children in Need’ day and came to school with lots of crazy hair designs. We spent the day learning about the charity and who is supported. We know how important it is to keep supporting and fundraising.

We worked very hard in the lead up to our Christmas concert, ‘The Bossy Christmas Fairy’. We practiced the songs and actions, we learnt our speaking parts fluently, we danced, we smiled, we supported our friends and we did a fantastic job. Our teachers and families were so proud of us!

Christmas is such a magical time, especially in school. We enjoyed attending our year one movie night and enjoyed the film ‘Arthur Christmas’. We had lots of yummy snacks too!

We have had a great term again, full of exciting learning opportunities and lots of fun.

Next term, we will be learning about a new theme and we are so excited to find out what it is!

The year one team wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Enjoy the Christmas break, stay safe and have fun. We can’t wait to hear what you have been getting up to when you come back in January.
