What a wonderful start to the Summer Term! We have really enjoyed our topic ‘Where we Belong’, throughout this half term we have had the chance to look at our homes and the local community. We started the theme with a walk around the local area, using Digimaps to plot our route. On the walk we looked at the types of houses that were in our community and the and buildings local to us. We had the opportunity to interview a builder to find out how buildings are made and the tools needed to get the job done. The children all came up with brilliant questions , some the teachers didn’t even know the answers to! We used this information to design and build our own dream house. Once the house was designed and built we became estate agents and tried to sell our house to our class teacher. As part of our work looking at our local community we completed a Transport Tally to see what types of vehicles go past the school and along Beaufort Road. The children felt that some of the vehicles were travelling too fast. Together, we decided to start a Road Safety campaign within school. The children created posters highlighting the importance of Road Safety and have also made a video for others to watch.
Year 1 had the chance to make their own pizzas, cook and eat them in the Forest School this half term. The children were keen to get their hands dirty and I’m sure will be able to make some delicious pizzas for you at home over half term.
Mr. Jenkins has been helping Year 1 with their tennis skills and has been very impressed by the talent in Year 1! We were also lucky enough to have a visit from Newport Live, who were promoting Tennis Lessons in Newport. The children really enjoyed this activity so it would be well worth a nose.
Our trip this half term was to St. Fagan’s Museum of Life, where we explored the different types of houses and buildings throughout the ages and compared them to our own buildings and houses now. The children were shocked that the toilets were outside and that there was no electricity! Their behaviour was impeccable throughout the trip and a great day was had by all, we even managed to dodge the rain!
Finally, we finished our half term with Sport’s Day. Again, the weather held off for the afternoon and the children did a fantastic job, both competing and supporting each other. Thank you for all your support this half term, we look forward to seeing what our last half term in Year 1 brings.
