Year One have had a great start to the Spring Term and have loved learning about the famous author, ‘Julia Donaldson.’ We started off the term reading one of her books, ‘Stick Man.’ We loved making our very own stick men out of clay and using them to retell the story using the Green Screen. Some of us dressed up as Stick Man during our drama sessions. We got to act out scenes and answer questions as if we were him!
We enjoyed reading the story ‘The Smartest Giant in Town’ and loved creating our own giants using large materials and natural resources! We have been learning how to name the giant’s clothes in Welsh and we have been thinking about how we can be kind to others, just like George the giant!
In Numeracy we have been learning how to count in 2s, 5s and 10s! After reading the story ‘Spinderella’ we have loved finding different ways to make 8 and using the Beebots to direct Spinderella to our classroom!
We have loved our PE lessons this half term and are getting great at Welsh Country Dancing!
We also enjoyed celebrating ‘Children’s Mental Health Week’ and learning about this year’s theme, ‘LET’S CONNECT!’ We got to spend time with the residents at Glyn Anwen, making meaningful connections with people we care about! We were excited to take over our favourite books to share with the residents there.
We celebrated ‘Safer Internet Day’ in February and learned about the importance of staying safe online. We loved making posters to help other children in the school! It was also great to learn all about St Dwynwen’s Day and make a card to send home to the people we care about and love.
The last week of this half term we have been preparing for our Eisteddfod in March. During our ‘Welsh Week’ we have made Bara Brith, learned about St David and created artwork in the style of Rhiannon Roberts ready for our Eisteddfod competition!
It was great to see so many family members attend our Literacy workshop in February! The children loved learning alongside their families and showing them the amazing things we do in Year One! We will be holding a Numeracy workshop in March and can’t wait for you all to join us again!
One of the highlights of this half term has been meeting all of the animals from Animal Encounters. We got to meet and hold a snake, an armadillo, a blue tongued skink, a kane toad and a binturong! What an incredible experience!
