A Bright and Beautiful Start to our New Term in Reception!

What a brilliant start to the new year we’ve had in Reception! Our topic this term has been “All Things Bright and Beautiful,” with a special focus on the word “bright.” From day to night, animals to art, we’ve had an exciting journey of discovery and creativity.
We began by exploring the differences between day and night. The children loved talking about their day-time and night-time routines, and it sparked some great discussions!
One of the highlights of our learning was looking at the work of the famous artist, David Hockney. His use of colours, especially his stunning use of dark tones, really caught the children’s attention. Inspired by his artwork, the children experimented with colour and created their own masterpieces.
Outdoor learning played a big part too. We ventured outside onto the yard to explore shadows. The children had a fantastic time exploring shadows and even made shadow puppets to show what they had learned. It was so much fun watching them get creative and use their imaginations!
In addition to our art and outdoor exploration, we dived into the fascinating world of nocturnal and diurnal animals. The children learned about animals that are awake at night (nocturnal) and those that are active during the day (diurnal). It was such a great way for the children to connect with nature and understand how different creatures live and behave.
Light was another key theme we explored. The children had lots of fun discovering different sources of light, looking at what gives off light and what doesn’t. We also learned about electricity and how to stay safe when using it. It was an important lesson and one the children really engaged with!
Our story focus this term has been the book ‘Peace at Last‘. After reading the story, the children did an amazing job retelling, and even performed a class assembly for their friends in Year 1 and 2. They sang a song and shared a video of their learning. They were fabulous!
We finished our term with a fantastic disco, where the children danced their hearts out! There were smiles all around, and plenty of yummy food to keep everyone energized. What a perfect way to celebrate all the bright learning that has taken place this term!
